Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

Satan, our worst enemy, knows well that the best time to attack us is when we are physically weak. People who suffer illness are very vulnerable to evil influences. This is why the devil sought out our Lord after the forty days Jesus fasted in the wilderness.

When Luke records this same scene of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness he added the detail that the devil left Jesus until an opportune time. Clearly Satan had done his best to cause Jesus to fall but could not.

This is why the devil withdrew for a time until another occasion when Jesus would also be vulnerable. If the devil is crafty in his attacks on our Lord you may be certain he will be as treacherous with us.

The point I make in this scene is that angels were there to refresh and strengthen our Lord following the assault made on His moral character.

Be certain dear Christian that the angels from heaven are sent to you with similar duties to perform. Listen to the Psalmist:

Psalm 91:11 (NIV)

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways”.

Even little children have guardian angels watching over them.

Matthew 18:10 (NIV)

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones.
For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.”

When death approaches angels are also near us.

Matthew 24:31 (NIV)

“And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.”

Luke 16:22 (NIV)

“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side.”

Angels drew near when our Lord was born. They attended Him during His earthly life. They ministered to Him in the hour of His death.

Luke 22:43-44 (NIV)

An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly,
and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

The Lord has these heavenly messengers with you at all times and all places. Be confident therefore that you are being well cared for in the daily battle of life. The child of God never walks alone.
