Making Contact

“When she heard about Jesus,
she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
because she thought, ‘If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.'”
Mark 5:27-28 (NIV)

“‘ Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.”
Mark 5:29 (NIV)

Recently I have returned to a hobby called “Amateur Radio” or “Ham Radio”. I have acquired some equipment and strung up some wire outside my home and now I can make contact with people in many countries around the world who also enjoy the hobby.

The woman in our text today was eager to make contact with Jesus. Her problem was that society in her time did not permit woman to engage men in conversation in public. For her to speak to Jesus was forbidden. So she sought to connect with the Lord by merely touching His prayer shawl. Her faith told her that would be enough—she would be healed. She accomplished her mission and instantly she was healed of the disease the doctors of her day could not cure. There is a significant lesson in this woman’s simple faith for us today.

We all need to make contact with our Creator. God has gone out of His way to make Himself known—first in the created world around us (Romans 1:20)—then through His Word, our Bible, through the Bible preached, and supremely in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ.

During His time among us, Jesus made the remarkable claim that if you have seen Him you have seen the Father (John 14:9). He went about doing things that only God can do—such as forgive sins (Jeremiah 31:34 cf. Mark 2:5). He claimed to share the glory Jehovah said He would not give to another (Isaiah 42:5 cf John 17:5). He took names of God for Himself (Psalm 23:1 cf. John 10:14).

Jesus made it very clear when here that if we wish to make a connection with God the Father we must come through Him (John 14:6). May the following words of Jesus speak peace and blessing to your heart today.

Matthew 11:27-30 (NIV)

“All things have been committed to me by my Father.
No one knows the Son except the Father,
and no one knows the Father except the Son
and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
