One Great Hymn

By , November 10, 2013

“You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created and have their being.”
Revelation 4:11 (NIV)

One of the greatest hymns ever penned was written by Philipp Bliss (1838-1876). Bliss was known for his godly character and joy in preaching the Gospel. He composed a number of hymns that are still sung in churches today.

His hymn below is a rich testimony to the character and the great work of salvation performed by the Lord Jesus Christ. There is a gold mine of Christian truth wrapped up in the 5 simple verses of this hymn. May my readers be able to say today, “This One is my eternal Saviour.”

Man of Sorrows! what a name
For the Son of God, Who came
Ruined sinners to reclaim.
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
In my place condemned He stood;
Sealed my pardon with His blood.
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Guilty, vile, and helpless we;
Spotless Lamb of God was He;
Full atonement can it be?
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Lifted up was He to die;
“It is finished!” was His cry;
Now in heaven exalted high.
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

When He comes, our glorious King,
All His ransomed home to bring,
Then anew His song we’ll sing:
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
