December 2001 Newsletter

It is hard to believe that it's three months since our last newsletter. We have enjoyed a full schedule of ministry as we seek to minister the Word both publicly and privately. Once again we thank the Lord for all His blessings upon us.

A new phase of the work we do is communicating to people in need via the internet. Both Susan and I have several people with concerns who live several hours away by car with whom we keep a steady correspondence. Occasionally we meet in person but the net keeps us close between visits.

Many of the people we work with have no church home. For various reasons they are not spiritually connected with a fellowship of believers. It is our joy to seek a warm group of Christians to nurture and assist them in their pilgrimage. How important it is to be solidly associated with a local church where the saints can minister love and grace.

In one situation recently I had the honour of conducting the funeral of a 33 year old mother and wife. She had come to faith in Christ a few weeks before death. It was such a privilege to speak to over 330 people at the memorial service, many of whom had never heard the Gospel before. Susan and I look forward to working with the family in the coming months and explaining to them why we are so confident that their loved one is with the Saviour.

Earlier in November we assisted at the funeral of another believer who was a young mom and wife. For several months I had been visiting each Wednesday at the hospital and taking her husband out after for lunch and having spiritual talks with him. She had been troubled about the death event and as I spoke to her from the Scriptures about what it is like for the child of God to enter heaven she was visibly relieved and soon was longing to be with her beloved Saviour. All fear of death was removed and one day she gently fell asleep in Jesus cradled in her husband's arms.

In another situation I have instituted monthly visits to a wonderful missionary couple who have served the Lord long and faithfully. It had come out in a telephone conversation that no one visited them and so I decided the Lord would have me fill a void in their lives. How blessed I am to spend time with this holy and devout couple and enjoy hearing them speak of their intimacy with Christ. I feel they minister much to me and wonder what I give back to them.

For many years a fine minister of Jesus Christ has used me as a mentor when in crisis. Now again he finds himself in significant difficulties without anyone to turn to other than me. Every two weeks Susan meets with his dear wife while I meet with him. Together we share in the Scriptures and I seek to lift him up with encouraging words. I find my own heart blessed as we share because he has a wonderful grasp of biblical truth and the history of the church.

In our last newsletter we mentioned that we were planning a week's vacation in Florida — we didn't go! We also mentioned that our son was getting married — he did! — and it was a great celebration.

The Lord has taken us through a very trying time this fall as world events affected so many people including those in ministry who rely on the personal donations of faithful supporters to fund them and their work. We have been learning anew to “Seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness” in sure and certain faith that all our needs will be met. We would like to extend a very special “thank you” to everyone who prayed for us and everyone who shared with us financially through this time. The Lord has not only blessed us through your generosity and concern but also the many people that He has given into our care, so the thanks comes not just from us but from them as well.

Thank you.
