Looking for God

“If you seek him, he will be found by you.” 1 Chronicles 28:9 (NIV)

Gordon Rumford Ministries Daily Devotional - Looking for GodI love to go to amateur (ham) radio flea markets to be both a vendor and also a customer. I might spend 3-4 Saturday mornings a year in this activity. It is fascinating to seek for some treasure that someone else has tired of and wants to sell off. It is like being a child on a treasure hunt.

There is excitement and suspense as all the tables are inspected for something I believe I cannot live without. Hopefully I find something I really need and at a good price.

Going to the flea market is a form of relief from the very serious business I am involved in most days. I am away from the telephone and emails. I can forget all the issues I am helping people work through for an hour or two.

I suppose some people like to go fishing, boating, hiking, read a good book or watch a funny movie to relax. We all have our favourite pastime.

Our verse today refers to an activity that is a form of pursuit. A 20th century author has named one of his books, The Pursuit of God. It is a good title for a book on getting to know our Creator.

Many people today regard God as an inference. They see the remarkable complexity of our physical world and infer that there must be a mind behind it. But God is seen as a being that is not interested in us personally.

These people have the vain hope that God is an absent deity and ignores us. However, the thought still lurks in most people’s minds that somehow God is looking over our shoulders and sees what we do. This is one reason why many people confess to be atheists. If there is no God then my actions with regard to God’s rules don’t matter. I can do what I think is best because there will never be an accounting for my life according to superior Being who wants me to live by His standards.

Many atheists do in fact care about what they do in the way of charitable giving or making contribution to the world, but it’s on their own terms and according to what they think is important – not what God thinks and what He says is important.

However, the Bible makes it clear that there is a God who has rules He wants us to live by and He does see all of us wherever we go and is aware of not only our actions but also our thoughts and motives. Psalm 139 tells us that God saw us as soon as we were conceived.

However there is a flip side to this knowledge of us by God. God calls on us to search for Him! God is indeed fully aware of us yet He waits for us to seek Him and invite Him to take over our lives and guide us in our journey through this world.

We need to look for God. His evidence is to be seen everywhere as we examine to intricacies of creation or look at a beautiful sunset. All that exists speaks of a brilliant designer.

Have you sought this amazing God to take over your life and guide you? The promise is that if you truly seek your Creator you will find Him. God has no pleasure in people ignoring Him and turning to a selfish lifestyle. He genuinely desires our company.

Pray to Jesus and ask Him to forgive your past and guide you in the future. He waits to hear from you. Seek Him while the invitation is open and you will surely find Him.
