Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities,
for there is no authority except that which God has established.
The authorities that exist have been established by God.

The most powerful nation on earth has just re-elected their president for a second four year term. The voice of the people was heard, and after all the rhetoric and criticisms by opposing candidates, it is time for the officials to get to work and seek to guide the United States through the many challenges of the years ahead.

Post election analysis will go on for a long time but the work must begin of governing in the best interests of the electorate.

We wonder if very many of the citizens of the United States really believe that God’s will was expressed in the ballot boxes around the country. Where does God figure in such events?

The apostle Paul makes it very clear that the Lord is highly active in guiding the events of the nations. Something as simple as rolling dice is under the control of the Lord.

Proverbs 16:33 (NIV)

The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.

Paul is right when he said that all authorities are appointed by the Lord. Regardless of whoever wants to take credit for electing President Obama in the US, the Lord insists He placed him in that office.

In our times of difficulty we wonder if the Lord is really in control. Our verse today assures us that God is in charge of all world events. Also we read of the Lord’s attention to the issues of the smallest of His creatures.

Matthew 10:29-31 (NIV)

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?
Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.
And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

The Lord orders who gets elected in the world’s most powerful democracy and at the same time watches a small bird in its struggles. Jesus wants you to make the obvious deduction that we are worth much more than the birds and so we should be comforted.

God not only controls the ballot boxes of the world’s democracies, He watches tenderly over all of His creation. Approach Him in confidence today and gain the needed help for your issues in life. Indeed you are worth much more than many sparrows.
