But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you,
then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve,
whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates,
or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living.
But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
Joshua 24:15 (NIV)
Today is the first day of a New Year and it is a good time to reflect on the year just past and look to the New Year with the determination that in the grace of God to serve the Lord better than ever before.
We need to make specific targets for ourselves. Perhaps it is to have at least 5 days each week when we have a good quiet time in prayer, singing in our hearts to the Lord and meditation on Scripture.
Another resolution might be to give more to alleviate suffering in the world, add more to what we give to our own church for missions. There are all kinds of good resolutions we can make that will be in the Lord’s will and that will benefit His people and those who have yet to believe in Jesus.
Joshua put two alternatives before the people as recorded in our verse today. As they felt that serving Jehovah was “undesirable” he called on them to either serve the gods of their fathers or the gods of the land in which they now lived.
But Joshua made it very clear Who he and his family were going to serve. He would not choose either of the options he put before the people. Instead he said he and his would serve the God the nation did not wish to serve.
Why not renew your vows to the Lord Who has redeemed you? Why not turn back to the God Who sent His only Son into the world to die for the sins of the world? Why not make a break from the negative thinking you have had in the year that is gone and start again to walk with the Lord in the light of His Word?
Take a moment and read a delightful Psalm—Psalm 100—and do as it bids you do. Come into His presence with joy and gladness as you start the New Year. Your Creator waits to hear from you. Come to Him and come today.
