Does he who formed the eye not see?”

“Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, ‘Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?'”
Luke 5:22 (NIV)

As a child, my favourite game was hide and seek. The person who was “it” had to close their eyes at some place like a tree or pole called “home”, and count to 50-100 while the rest of us spread out and hid ourselves from the person who was “It”.

If the person who was it saw you they would race to the predetermined place to tag you out. If you outran the person you would touch the place and say, “Home free”. The game was innocent enough and provided us children with a lot of amusement for free.

As adults some of us have the notion that God cannot see all of our activities, nor can He read our thoughts. However, such is not the case. The Creator Who formed our eyes by which we see certainly sees everything.

In our passage in Luke, Jesus demonstrated one of His divine characteristics by reading the thoughts of the men in the crowd. Our Lord had just forgiven a man his sins and the people watching and listening thought to themselves, “Who can forgive sin but God alone?” They were right and wrong at the same time. The men were right to understand that only God can forgive sins. They were wrong because they did not acknowledge that Jesus was God in human form.

Do you take comfort from the knowledge that the God Who made you with the ability to hear also hears your prayers? Does it help you to know that the God Who created your eyes also sees you all of the time? Are you comforted by the truth that God knows all of your unspoken thoughts, that He feels the pain you are experiencing today?

If these abilities of God make you uncomfortable it must be because you do not wish your Maker to hear all of your speech, see all of your actions, or know all of your thoughts. But there is no where to hide from the living God.

Come to the God Who knows you inside out. Confess your sin and ask forgiveness for Jesus’ sake. Then rest comfortably in the truth that you are seen, heard and known by the Maker of heaven and earth. Your needs shall be provided for by this all knowing Creator. By being His beloved child you have the right and responsibility to talk to Him, live for Him, love Him, and walk with Him through all of the issues of this life until the day you open your eyes in heaven, the place prepared for all who love Him.
