“He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”

The Hebrew people must have been nature lovers because when they wanted to speak of abstract, non physical things like God’s protection of His people they would say what is in our verse today.

Psalm 91 is full of familiar scenes that we all know and understand and he moves from them to the less familiar and non physical. In verse one he speaks of being so close to the Lord that we are in His shadow. We cannot come much closer than that!

In verse 2 the writer speaks of God as his fortress. We all can recall being in a fortress, or having seen photos of  those huge, strong, well built structures that were designed to keep people safe inside. The walls of a fortress appear able to keep out any enemy.

Again and again as you read Psalm 91 you need to pause and ponder the dynamic scene described and see how that pictures how very secure the child of God really is.

Storms may howl at our door but we are kept safe by the Almighty God of the universe. Believers are not left to their own wits to deal with the harsh realities of life. Instead they find refuge, security, safety because of how near the Lord is to them.

Take a few moments today and read through Psalm 91. You will certainly be blessed by the wonderful descriptions of how you are kept from harm by an ever faithful, present, God of the universe.

Take comfort today in the knowledge that your Saviour is ever present to ensure the safety of all His people. Our Lord’s boast when praying to the Father in John 17:12 was that He kept all His loved ones safe. Deal with whatever comes your way today in the full knowledge that the sovereign, all powerful God is beside you to control everything for your eternal good. Indeed you are eternally secure under His wings.
