“Do not love the world or anything in the world.
If anyone loves the world,
love for the Father is not in them.”
1 John 2:15 (NIV)
Bob Merrill wrote several big musical hits in the 1950’s and 1960’s. One of his very popular songs was titled, “Love makes the world go round”. Whatever you think of the lyrics in the song, the point Merrill was seeking to make is obvious—and has truth to it.
The great love song in Scripture is 1 Corinthians 13—and there we read the inspired truth that without love we are nothing. Certainly we ought to have the love of God poured out in our hearts (Romans 5:5) so that we find love toward the Lord and others comes naturally and readily—and powerfully.
1 John 3:14-15 assures us that one way we know we have become Christians is because of the love in our hearts for God’s children. I know this truth was used by the Holy Spirit to assure me that I was indeed a believer in Jesus. I knew there was a love for Christians in my heart that was not there earlier in my life. I could not explain it in natural terms. It was miraculous. On the other hand, when we become followers of Jesus, we discover that the love we had for the world is gone from our hearts.
In the verses following 1 John 2:15 we are given reasons for not loving the world. It is full of lust and false pride in ourselves. This is why Jesus taught us that in order to truly follow Him we must “hate” our own life.
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother,
wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—
such a person cannot be my disciple.”
Luke 14:26 (NIV)
We recognize that Jesus was using a literary device when He speaks of “hating” our family members and ourselves. What He meant was that our self love must be a feeble candle compared to the brilliant radiance of love we possess for the Lord.
Has the Lord poured out His love in your heart? Do you find yourself growing in love for things spiritual and is your love for this world and its pleasures fading in comparison? If you still find yourself fascinated by the things of this life you need to question whether or not you are a believer in Jesus.
You see, when someone is truly born again, their system of values is turned upside down. What they once hated they now love and what they once loved they now hate. It is inevitable that this happens. Search your heart today and determine if this miracle of love has happened to you. If it has rejoice! If it has not then search for the Lord with all your heart until you discover the miracle of love has taken place in your heart.
