“What, then, shall we say in response to these things?
If God is for us, who can be against us?”
Romans 8:31 (NIV)
All of us, as adults, have come to the end of our resources from time to time and learned once more that we do not have all the answers to the questions in life. It is humbling to be sure. “Why does life have to be so complicated at times?”, we ask. We long for the days when we were young and care free. But we must go on whether or not we can figure it all out beforehand.
Paul makes a summary statement in our verse today. As far as Paul is concerned his comment about God stops all questions and is the conclusion of the matter. Paul seems almost reckless to some people in what he says here.
Paul believes the matter is as simple at that. If God is for us it does not matter how dreadful or formidable the opposition is. The whole matter rests on this one issue. Is God for us or not? If God is not for us we have lost before we have begun. If God is on side with us there is no concern about the opposition. We are guaranteed the victory. That is that.
“How big is your God?”, asked one theologian. He was right to put the question to us. Our fears fade like the morning dew when we have the right perspective on the infinite God we serve. Nothing nor anyone can prevail against the one true and living God. All of creation is but a dream in the night when put alongside the God Who spoke it all into existence.
Is your mistake to be found in your wrong understanding of Who God really is? Look again to the heavens. Consider how immense the universe is. God is infinitely greater than that. Study the complexity of physics, biology, mathematics and remember that the God Who created those governing laws is so much wiser and complex than what you have pondered. Shake off your doubts today and regain the proper perspective of our great God and Saviour. Daniel 11:32:
“Those who know their God shall be strong and do mighty things.”
So often we shortchange ourselves when we forget Who God really is.
Romans 11:33 (NIV):
“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!”
