People That Matter

“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will…
[know] we have an advocate with the Father—
Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.”

“While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.” John 17:12 (NIV)

Recently I was in discussion with a fellow believer about how people are treated in the lineups for access to medical treatment in Canada. He said that he believed that people that matter get preferential treatment from the health care system in Canada.

Many Canadians believe the same. They could not imagine a government official waiting in line for an MRI with welfare recipients.

Whether or not such is the case there is one place where the rich and powerful do not have preferred treatment and that is at the bar of justice in God’s courtroom. In that court, which will convene at the end of time, no amount of money will buy a better lawyer who might out argue a lesser experienced lawyer.

The ground will be perfectly level in that day and there will not be any opportunity to get ahead of anyone else in the lineup or receive preferential treatment.

Some years ago I stood by the hospital bed of a brilliant lawyer who was dying. His reputation was well known in the country for difficult cases he had argued and won for his clients. Now all that was behind him as he was making himself ready to pass from this world to the next.

I mentioned to him that though he had won so many cases during his long and successful career, even he had lost the occasional court room battle. He agreed.

Then I referred to a lawyer who had never lost a case in His entire career. The man instantly know Who it was to whom I referred. I quoted to him our verses today that speaks of Jesus Christ and His perfect track record regarding those He represents.

I assured the patient that his case was going to be won by the perfect lawyer who never lost a case. He smiled and nodded agreement. I finished by quoting lines from Charles Wesley’s hymn:

He ever lives above, for me to intercede;
His all redeeming love, His precious blood, to plead:
My God is reconciled; His pardoning voice I hear;
He owns me for His child; I can no longer fear:
With confidence I now draw nigh, And “Father, Abba, Father,” cry.

That fine Christian man passed from this life with full assurance that his case was secure because he had retained the world’s best lawyer. Has my reader done the same? Can you say with confidence that you have retained the world’s best lawyer? He calls for all of us to come as we are helpless and needy. He is able to save all who come in humility and pray to him—the resurrected Saviour. He forgives sinners and comforts those who are lost, His reputation is impeccable and He has never lost a case nor will He.
