I have a gift from my late father that is very important to me. It is a men’s gold Hamilton pocket watch. This watch came from Detroit and was a gift from John Rumford to his brother P.B. Rumford, my father’s father. My grandfather gave it to his son, my dad, and in turn it was given to me by my father.

The watch was appraised and it was not worth a lot of money, but I value it greatly because of who gave it to me. No one in this world would regard that watch as something especially wonderful, but what makes it so important to me is the fact it was a gift from someone I love very much.

There are numerous sayings of Jesus that only John records. In our verse today there is an especially precious figure of speech recorded for our encouragement. Jesus loves this particular way of describing His people so much that He uses it 5X in John 17 to identify His followers.

The expression Jesus uses is the one where He calls His people a gift from God the Father. Now at first glance, the fact that the covenant people were given to Jesus by the Father is not very exciting. We may think that it is a nice way of looking at believers, but on further consideration it overwhelms us.

Most of us do not regard ourselves as being especially important in the grand scheme of things. Important people have never heard of us, we are not rich and famous, we simply are not of great value to society at large.

BUT we are immensely important in the eyes of our Creator, because He chose us out of all humanity and presented us to His beloved Son, Jesus Christ as a special gift. 1 Peter 2:9 NIV

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,
God’s special possession…”

For those who read this devotional and recognize you are not among the rich and powerful in this world, take delight in this truth. You are “God’s special possession” you are a treasured gift to Jesus Christ and the Saviour loves you just as you are because His beloved Father in heaven chose you and gave you as a gift to Him.

Does this truth not urge you to come into the presence of the Lord with joy in your heart? Can you find great satisfaction in being the special gift you are? Rejoice, praise the Lord, come before Him and sing! Come and come now.
