“Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon,
and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—
to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.”
Joshua 1:4 (NIV)
For years many critics of the Bible insisted it was wrong to claim a powerful nation called the Hittites ever existed. The Hittites are mentioned over 50 times in the Old Testament and declared to be a powerful nation.
Only in 1884 with the publication of a scholarly book “The Empire of the Hittites”, documenting in great detail the existence of the Hittites and establishing that it was a great nation just as the Bible stated, was Scripture vindicated. So, scholars were left with egg on their faces for saying the Bible was wrong to mention this “fictitious” (as they called it) nation.
A bit of modesty is needed for critics of the Bible in commenting on its contents. On the other hand, we evangelical Christians need to demonstrate modesty of expression as well.
Certainly, there are people who claim the Bible has all the answers, but for those who read Scripture carefully we know better. Deuteronomy 29:29 (NIV) declares,
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God,
but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever,
that we may follow all the words of this law.”
So, from this verse we learn that the Lord has not told us all we might want to know but has revealed all we need to know in order to be fully obedient to the Lord our God.
Can you stifle your curiosity about things not revealed? Are you living up to all that is revealed, the things that relate to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3)? Perhaps today you need a fresh study of Scripture. A study that will make your Bible a lamp to your feet to shine on the pathway of obedience, the path that leads to eternal life. (Psalm 119:105)
