Can We Trust Scripture?

Now the serpent was more crafty than any
of the wild animals the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God really say,
‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
The woman said to the serpent,
“We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
but God did say,‘You must not eat fruit from the tree
that is in the middle of the garden,
and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”
“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.

From the beginning of the human race, challenges have been made concerning what the Lord has or has not said and if He tells the truth or lies.

In our verses for today we witness the devil’s challenges to the honesty of the Lord’s clear warning to Adam and Eve. Through the serpent, Eve is assured that God was lying. Ironically it is the devil who is lying and soon enough Eve and Adam will fall victim to his lies as they believed him and doubted God.

In John 8:44 (NIV) Jesus is quoted as saying about Satan,

“He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth,
for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language,
for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

It seems that Jesus was saying that the devil was the first murderer as his lies caused Adam and Eve to die. He is also called the “father of lies” which apparently means lies began in the world with his action in Genesis 3.

Sad as it may be people even today imitate the devil’s work in the Garden of Eden as they deny the clear teaching of the Bible concerning the way to eternal life.

When I attended the funeral of a godless neighbour many years ago the pastor assured all of us who attended that our neighbour was now happy in heaven. For the family that idea might have been comforting but it was not true. Numerous of us had heard the man declare that he would rather go to hell to be with his friends than heaven where he would not know anyone. Scripture makes abundantly clear that if you live without God you will die without Him as well.

Be sure my reader that the clear teaching of Scripture is bedrock truth and can be trusted always. Today go on building your life on the Bible and its teaching. Jesus said:

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine
and puts them into practice
is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
The rain came down, the streams rose,
and the winds blew and beat against that house;
yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

Matthew 7:24-25 (NIV)
