“It was good for me to be afflicted
so that I might learn your decrees.
Psalm 119:71 (NIV)
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you,
for my power is made perfect in weakness.’
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses,
so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
Did you ever think that suffering is a school in which we learn invaluable lessons about ourselves and the One who created us?
What we looked at yesterday was the importance of learning about God’s amazing grace through His work in us and not just through singing the words of the hymn Amazing Grace. What can we learn about ourselves through suffering that is for our good?
First, we are brought to recognize our limits when we suffer and cannot find a way back to health or restore the good days we once enjoyed. When we recognize the fact that we are not the masters of life we will be more willing to turn to the One who said,
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
When life is wonderful we can think that our way of living is due to our own wise decisions and not the result of the Lord’s blessing.
The Psalmist also shows us that we learn more of Scripture when we are afflicted. Mature believers who are afflicted search Scripture for answers and promises when they suffer. Psalm 18:6 (NIV) reads:
“In my distress I called to the Lord;
I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;
my cry came before him, into his ears”
We learn that our cries for help do indeed ascend to the ears of our God. In Moses’ day, just prior to the Exodus, the Lord said in Exodus 3:7
“I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt.
I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers,
and I am concerned about their suffering.”
Do you believe that your prayers for help reach the ear of the Lord? Do you believe the Lord when He says in Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)
“And without faith it is impossible to please God,
because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists
and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
The Lord wants to hear from you today. Come to Him and pour out your heart in the confidence He hears your complaint. Come and come today.
