“That day when evening came,
he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go over to the other side.’
Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along,
just as he was, in the boat.
There were also other boats with him.
A furious squall came up, and the waves broke
over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.
Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.
The disciples woke him and said to him,
‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves,
‘Quiet! Be still!’
Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid?
Do you still have no faith?
They were terrified and asked each other,
‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’”
Mark 4:35-41 (NIV)
This story is what we need in our world’s present chaotic situation. Our Lord demonstrates the fact that He controls the weather. With all our scientific knowledge we have trouble predicting the weather!
When awakened, Jesus asks the disciples what the fuss is all about. He was with them, He is the Creator God, so why worry? The world in which we live was designed by the Lord and He oversees it all.
This truth concerning the Lord being superintendent of His creation is very important for the Lord’s people in our present world crisis. Those who think there is nothing or no one beyond what we see with our eyes have no hope but continual fear.
Those who wish to be free to live as they wish often deny there is a God to Whom they must some day give an account. However, many atheists have been driven to pray when drowning in adversity. Once the storm has passed these people return to their own devices.
They also refuse to believe the miracles recorded in the Gospels attributed to Jesus. The problem for these people is that even our Lord’s sworn enemies at the time never denied He performed miracles. They were desperate to discredit him any way possible but they could not speak against His great powers.
Will you take comfort in the knowledge that regardless of what storms we must endure in this life that our Lord and Saviour is in complete control? If He reined in the storm at His will 2,000 years ago, be sure He is in charge of the pandemic we are experiencing today and in His time it will pass into history.
