“If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
they will lift you up in their hands,
Psalm 91:9-12 (NIV)
“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby,
keeping watch over their flocks at night.
An angel of the Lord appeared to them,
and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid.
I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you;
he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you:
You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’”
Luke 2:8-12 (NIV)
“The time came when the beggar died
and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side.
The rich man also died and was buried.”
Luke 16:22 (NIV)
“An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him”
Luke 22:43 (NIV)
As a child I daydreamed about the society in heaven, and could not imagine anything for angels to do except play their harps all day long. My childish perception of the duties of angels was that they were very boring and monotonous. I certainly did not want that job when I reached heaven!
After many years of studying the Bible, I was made aware of many duties angels faithfully perform for the Lord. Three such duties are mentioned in our verses for today.
First, we see in Psalm 91 that angels work in our world on behalf of God’s people. Here we are told they are commanded to act as guards for God’s children. They see ahead things we do not see and either strengthen us to continue our course or they divert us around the threat. Either way we have invisible creatures attending us every moment of our lives.
Angels, secondly, were messengers from the Lord to His people. Before we had the complete Bible they often appeared visibly and spoke audibly. Such a method of communication was needed by the Lord’s people to fill in the gaps of the written revelation of the Lord to His people. Once the New Testament was complete God’s people had all the information needed to live pleasing to the Lord in all ways.
A third ministry of angels on behalf of the God’s people is to come to them in the hour of death and minister grace. This equips they so they are strengthened to walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
So, from life’s first breath to last, we have the presence of holy angels to shield us and finally come to us to escort us home to heaven. Reader do you have this hope and confidence? Can you say, “The Lord’s angels shall appear to me before I leave this world and they shall make me adequate for my journey home.”? Rejoice believer in the very adequate provision of these powerful creatures to walk with us every step of the way to the gates of the Celestial City!
