Our text for today shows an elderly man named Simeon, who had an amazing promise from God. The promise was that he would live to see the Messiah of the covenant.
Of course, all the righteous and devout people in the land were clinging to the hope that the Lord might fulfil His promise of a coming Deliverer or Messiah. The coming One would bring the fulfilment of the promises and cause the people to be assured the Lord had not abandoned them.
One day the Holy Spirit came to the temple—right to Mary and Joseph—and began to identify just Who the baby was. That was the most joyful day in Simeon’s life. He was once more assured that what the Lord had promised, He would deliver.
The Lord is faithful, and what He promises will surely come to pass. The old man and the baby teach us that what is promised will surely come to be.
The Lord has made exceptionally great and precious promises for us (1 Peter 1:4). As He fulfilled His promise to Simeon, so He will when you bring His promises to Him.
Matthew Henry famously said, “We must sue God for the performance of His promises.”
So, find a promise He has made that speaks to your need. Come to Him in faith with the promise, and plead your case before Him. Come and come now.
