Being Afraid

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;
he will never leave you nor forsake you.
Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
Deuteronomy 31:8

Fear is a most enervating emotion. It can suck the life out of us if we allow it to reign in our hearts and minds. But how can we rise above fear when it threatens to drown us in an ocean of inactivity?

Our verse for today brings wonderful teaching on how to make fear lose it paralyzing grip on us.

Three truths are stated in this powerful verse and they combine to strengthen our productive grip on life regardless of whatever circumstances we may be facing.

First, the believer has the Lord’s word that He goes ahead of us in our faith journey. If you will, He spies out the land where we will soon walk and checks things out only allowing what He knows we can bear.

As Scripture says, Psalm 103:13-14

“As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.”

Then, the verse tells us that the Lord is with us. Our omnipresent Lord walks beside us and holds our hand as we walk the path of obedience.

Jesus put it so well when He said in John 10:28-29

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish;
no one will snatch them out of my hand.
My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all;
no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.”

So, it is not so much that the Lord holds your hand as it is that the Lord holds you in His hand.

Thirdly, He promises never to leave us or forsake us. Many marriage partners live in fear that their partner will someday leave them for another person. Sadly some who promise to stay loyal “til death do us part” part before death and they disgrace their wedding vows.

God is faithful in all His commitments, and various times in Scripture pledges to be faithful to us forever.

How can fear survive in the context of such powerful truths?

Do you not find your spirits lifted up as you reflect on these truths of how Your Lord and Saviour graciously attends to you every step of your journey home to heaven?

Turn yourself to Him once more. Come to Him and come now.
