God Is As Good As His Word!

“Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
Zechariah 9:9 (NIV)

“The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival
heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.
They took palm branches and went out to meet him,
shouting, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is he
who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the king of Israel!’”
John 12:13-14 (NIV)

Some Bible scholars, eager to discredit Scripture, complain that in a matter of days the Jews in Jerusalem went from singing Jesus’ praise to crying “Crucify Him.” (Luke 23:21 et al.).

They say this sudden reversal of opinion concerning Jesus simply could not happen so quickly. Possibly they are right. However, a more careful reading of the text discloses that those who lauded our Lord that day were people who had come to Jerusalem to celebrate the festival and were not permanent residents there. It pays to read the text!

Jesus had limited acceptance in Jerusalem and Judea during His 3 ½ years of public ministry. But the time He spent in the north, namely Galilee, was highly successful with large crowds. Therefore, the simple explanation is that the crowds shouting Jesus’ praise were the ones who had “come for the festival” and were not the residents of Jerusalem. The Jews who cried for our Lord to be crucified were likely the permanent residents of Jerusalem. So biblical critics are once more defeated and our trust in God’s Word grows.

We wonder if the travellers who made such joyful exclamations realized they were fulfilling the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9. The important thing to note is that once more God is proven to be as good as His Word.

Do you believe the Bible? Are you confident in the accuracy of God’s Word? What more proof do you need? We need to have confidence in the inspired Word of God and treasure its teaching.

A good exercise would be to read Psalm 119 and note how many synonyms the author uses for Scripture. Your enjoyment of your Bible will be enhanced through such a brief exercise.

For those who have yet to believe the teaching of the Bible, keep reading these devotionals and you will find your faith growing. You will read of prophecies written hundreds of years before time, all coming true in the first coming of Christ. Christians have great reason to believe in the promises concerning Jesus’ second coming because all the prophecies about His first coming came true!

God is certainly as good as His Word!!
