Jesus Needed Help?

"An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him."
Luke 22:43 (NIV)

When we seek to understand the matter of our Lord's incarnation we always come away with more questions than answers.

We know that when Jesus walked this earth He taught people to believe that He was God—in human form.

We know that the prophesied Messiah was described as One Who had existed from eternity (Micah 5:2).

We also know that Jesus forgave sins—the work of God alone—and that He caused the blind to see and the lame to walk. He even raised the dead.

So we understand that when our Lord came into the world, He brought with Him supernatural powers. Yet there are passages that describe Him as tired, weary, and hungry.

So His humanity—combined with His deity—allowed Him to feel all the discomforts that we do as humans. This is why our verse for today is so insightful.

We see how our Lord was given strength for the experiences of arrest, slander, flogging, and death on the cross.

We read how He confessed to Peter, James and John in Gethsemane, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Matthew 26:38 (NIV)

So we understand that even our beloved Lord Jesus needed heavenly help when He faced His greatest crisis.

If Jesus needed help when this horror came upon Him, how much more do we need the angels sent from heaven to comfort, strengthen and further prepare us for the issues we face in life?

Over and over as I've ministered to someone in a time of trial, I've urged them to remember the experience of Jesus praying in Gethsemane and suggested to pray that this might be their experience as well.

In Luke 16:22 we read of a poor beggar named Lazarus facing the greatest crisis of his miserable life. As he stared death in the face, angels from heaven appeared and ministered to him—as they did for Jesus—and gently, lovingly carried him to heaven.

Christian friend, whatever your time of sorrow contains for you, believe me when I tell you—angels are standing by to minister mercy and grace to you in this time of trial. As a child of God you will not be alone in this situation.

Come with confidence and you will be heard.
