Several times I took my children when they were young to the ocean for a holiday. I still have some photos of the place and the sand castles we built. Not having an artistic bone in my body, I was not very good at creating a recognizable structure.

Looking at some other dad’s efforts along the beach I knew instantly that building sand castles was not my calling. However we had lots of fun trying.

Sometimes when we are weary in the battle of life we look around at other Christians and they seem to wear a perpetual grin on their faces and appear to live care free lives. We ask ourselves why we are so unspiritual as to let life get us down and doubting.

In our passage today we hear a message from the most spiritual and wonderful person in history up to Jesus’ time. Jesus says so Himself. Yet this amazing man of God had some serious doubts about Jesus and sent friends to ask Him if He was really the Messiah of Old Testament prophecy or should they look for someone else.

The Jewish people wrote in a very rich and three dimensional manner. We who are Gentiles do not often speak in such vivid language as they did. For example, in the Old Testament, when the prophet wanted to speak of the action of an earthquake they might say, “the earth opened its mouth” Numbers 16:32 (NIV). Or in speaking of joy they might say “the trees of the field will clap their hands” Isaiah 55:12 (NIV). It is certainly a dramatic and engaging manner in which to speak and readily captures the reader’s imagination.

Our Lord employed this form of speech in His public ministry and we benefit greatly from His imagery as He taught eternal truths. In John 14 Jesus is seeking to comfort the disciples regarding His departure and also to equip them for their life’s work of proclaiming the Gospel to the whole world as they knew it. Numerous times in this chapter Jesus refers to places where the disciples will live with Him forever.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

As a small boy I thought my father knew everything. He could repair our family car, finish off the basement including the electrical wiring. His sense of direction was phenomenal. He knew how to hunt and trap for food, and how to ice fish. I thought there was nothing useful he did not know.

As an adult I came to realize my beloved father had limits to his knowledge and wisdom for living. It did not change my love and respect for him in the least.

Jesus’ Great Love

“The third time he said to him,
‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time,
‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things;
you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my sheep.’”
John 21:17 (NIV)

During the meal in the Upper Room all of the disciples argued as to which of them should be counted greatest. So Peter sinned along with the rest as he put forward reasons why he was a better disciple than the others.

Peter had also demonstrated great self confidence the night of the betrayal when he told his Master he would go with Him to the death if necessary. Sadly Peter would do no such thing when in Gethsemane. Instead of going with Jesus at the arrest in Gethsemane he fled with the rest.
