Help!

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV)

As a small boy I thought my father knew everything. He could repair our family car, finish off the basement including the electrical wiring. His sense of direction was phenomenal. He knew how to hunt and trap for food, and how to ice fish. I thought there was nothing useful he did not know.

As an adult I came to realize my beloved father had limits to his knowledge and wisdom for living. It did not change my love and respect for him in the least.

My Father in heaven is different from my earthly father. The Lord has infinite wisdom, power, love, holiness, compassion, grace, and on the list goes. There is nothing my heavenly Father cannot do.

Jesus’ Great Love

“The third time he said to him,
‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time,
‘Do you love me?’ He said, ‘Lord, you know all things;
you know that I love you.’ Jesus said, ‘Feed my sheep.’”
John 21:17 (NIV)

During the meal in the Upper Room all of the disciples argued as to which of them should be counted greatest. So Peter sinned along with the rest as he put forward reasons why he was a better disciple than the others.

Peter had also demonstrated great self confidence the night of the betrayal when he told his Master he would go with Him to the death if necessary. Sadly Peter would do no such thing when in Gethsemane. Instead of going with Jesus at the arrest in Gethsemane he fled with the rest.

We admire Peter that night in spite of his bravado and cowardice because he shadowed his beloved Saviour to the trial before the Sanhedrin. But there he denies vehemently that he knew the man on trial. So Peter failed his Master in three ways that very night.

When I was a preschooler a cousin of mine developed spinal meningitis. He and his family lived in Nova Scotia and my mother travelled down there on the train to be with her sister and nephew at a critical time. Clyde was a strapping young fellow about 14 years old but 6 feet tall. Everyone loved him at school and in the neighbourhood. However back then penicillin had only recently been discovered and put into public use. Sadly it was too late for my cousin as the infection spread to his brain and after a number of weeks he went to be with Jesus.

The Best Protection in the World

“I protected them and kept them safe”
John 17:12 (NIV)

Gordon Rumford Ministries | Daily Devotional | The Best Protection in the WorldOne sunny afternoon near suppertime on the farm the cows came running home in a desperate hurry. There was only one explanation for their obvious fright. A black bear somewhere back on the cow path had decided that they looked good for supper and tried to separate one of them from the herd for a kill and subsequent feast.

As long as bears left us alone on the farm we treated them with the same courtesy. However when they chased our cows we could not milk them properly that night and we also ran the risk of losing one of them at the claws of the bear. If it was the bear or one or more of our cows, the decision was a no brainer.

My uncle went into the dining room of the farmhouse, took down the old Winchester model 92 and grabbed some shells for the 44-40 calibre rifle. Stepping outside he loaded the empty gun, pumped a live cartridge into the firing chamber, clicked on the safety and off we went. I had the dog on a leash and we retraced the tracks of the cows to where the dog could pick up the scent.
