The All Knowing God

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord,
know it completely.
Psalm 139:1-4 NIV

In our Psalm for today we read about the omniscience of the Lord. The Psalmist wants everyone to know that God can read our thoughts and he knows everything about us, even the secret thoughts we do not utter for fear of being condemned.

The Psalmist seems comfortable with this idea of God knowing everything that goes on in his mind. Such cannot be said for all of us I fear. Some of us have reason to be uncomfortable at God’s ability to know all of our thoughts.

A lustful glance at someone, a flash of anger toward our enemy, coveting something we cannot afford to buy—so many things come to mind as we recoil from the Lord as Peter did so long ago when he suddenly realized he was in the presence of a holy God (Luke 5:8).

What a blessing it is to know that all of our sinful thoughts that come daily into our minds can be eradicated through the blood of Christ. Indeed we may access the needed power to overcome thoughts that make us ashamed. There is nothing stopping us from continuing to work on controlling our thought life.

Admittedly this can be the real battleground for temptation but we may more and more bring every thought captive to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).

If you have given up hope of controlling evil thoughts, come again to the Lord and ask for conquering grace to win battles in this private part of your life. Be encouraged by Philippians 2 where we read in vss. 12-13 NIV

“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—
not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—
continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,
for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

Determine that in God’s grace you shall win battles every day for your good and the glory of God who strengthens you. 2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
