They Know

“Furthermore, the Lord will also hand Israel along with you over to the Philistines; so tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. Indeed, the Lord will hand the army of Israel over to the Philistines!”
1Samuel 28:19 (NASB)

“And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.”
Luke 9:30-31 (NASB)

“In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Luke 15:10 (NASB)

“…and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who live on the earth?’”
Revelation 6:10 (NASB)

Most of us have had times in our lives when we longed to know the future.

Perhaps we long to know when suffering will end. Or in our youth we wish to know if a secret love will say “Yes” when we ask them out. We sometimes wish to know about future events for a variety of reasons.

In biblical history we read of several situations where people knew specific things that were going to happen in the future. The examples given in our verses today are of people in heaven who had knowledge of events that our sovereign God was going to have happen in the future.

Some people argue that if people in heaven knew about future tragedy it would make them lose some or even all of their joy. Well, if you study the three examples in today’s verses no negative feelings are indicated by them. So, while we should not speculate where evidence is lacking, we need to understand all that is clearly observed.

In 1 Samuel 28:19, deceased Samuel tells Saul that the next day the Philistines will conquer Israel and Saul and his sons would die.

In Luke 9:30-31 Moses and Elijah appear on the mount with Jesus and discuss the coming death of Jesus at Jerusalem.

In Luke 15:10 we learn that information concerning people being converted on earth is made known in heaven and joy is experienced in the angels presence.

In Revelation 6:10 we hear the voices of martyrs asking when the Lord would avenge their deaths. They knew the evil ones had not yet been punished and desired that the Lord would dispense judgment.

So, we learn that the saints in heaven have a genuine interest in things that are happening—or are not happening—on earth. God’s people in heaven do have knowledge of at least certain things here on earth, past, present and future.

What ever the saints know about things here on earth, rest assured that what occupies their attention most is not what they know about our world, but rather the remarkable wonders and the amazing sights surrounding them in heaven itself. The following verses from a lengthy poem captures a bit of the rapturous sights that await us for the day when our faith becomes sight. They know, and we shall know. Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus.

The sands of time are sinking;
the dawn of heaven breaks;
the summer morn I've sighed for,
the fair sweet morn awakes;
dark, dark has been the midnight,
but dayspring is at hand,
and glory, glory dwelleth
in Emmanuel's land.

The King there in His beauty
without a veil is seen;
it were a well-spent journey,
though trials lay between:
the Lamb with His fair army
on Zion's mountain stands,
and glory, glory dwelleth
in Emmanuel's land.

O Christ, He is the fountain,
the deep, sweet well of love!
The streams on earth I've tasted;
more deep I'll drink above:
there to an ocean fullness
His mercy doth expand,
and glory, glory dwelleth
in Emmanuel's land.

The bride eyes not her garment,
but her dear bridegroom's face;
I will not gaze at glory,
but on my King of grace;
not at the crown He giveth,
but on His piercéd hands;
the Lamb is all the glory
of Emmanuel's land.
