Hearing Jesus

"While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!'”
Matthew 17:5 (NIV)

The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel! ” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.
1 Samuel 3:10 (NIV)

Yesterday I asked my readers to submit to Jesus even when life is difficult, and listen for His voice. Today I want to give encouragement to readers concerning how to hear Jesus speak.

Certainly the most important way Jesus speaks to us is through Scripture.

The Bible is the most important book anyone can read. Its pages are full of wisdom and counsel for those willing to listen and obey its teaching.

No voice from the Lord will ever contradict the teaching of the Bible.

A most critical principle for anyone to understand is that God speaks only to those who listen—who have a desire to hear the voice of God.

Examine your own heart and ask yourself if you are willing to hear the Lord speak—even if He tells you difficult things.

Once you have settled that most important matter, you're guaranteed to hear God speaking to you from Scripture (John 7:17). You have Jesus' word that if you are prepared to follow His way, you shall most certainly hear Him speak.

After the reading of Scripture to hear the voice of Jesus, the next most important way to hear Him is to attend church where the Bible is reverently and faithfully preached. Then, listen for His voice in your daily prayer times as the Holy Spirit guides you into all truth (John 16:13).

Further, listen as you sing the great hymns of the faith. Good hymns are full of biblical truth.

Charles Wesley had from 1 to 5 Scripture references after every line of every verse of every hymn he ever composed. His hymns were rich with the voice of Jesus.

Then there is wisdom in the godly counsel of holy people.

We're blessed to have sincere Christians with greater experience of God and His ways than we have. These people can share how Scripture spoke to them in situations similar to what you're facing. They can tell you how Jesus spoke to them.

These are some of the most reliable ways to hear Jesus speak.

Come to Him today and tell Him to speak because you're ready to listen. You shall certainly hear Him.
